控方證人介紹：
倫敦著名邢案辯護(hù)律師韋菲爵士（查爾斯·勞頓 Charles Laughton 飾）接受了心臟病治療，但是身體依舊虛弱，第一天回家休養(yǎng)，護(hù)士一直嚴(yán)厲監(jiān)督他服藥，并杜絕煙酒。管家為了便于上樓，還專門為他修了電梯。但是，種種關(guān)心照顧，對(duì)于這位桀驁不馴、牙尖嘴利的大律師根本不起作用，反倒是一紙?jiān)V狀令他倍感興奮。律師梅休和當(dāng)事人沃爾（泰隆·鮑華 Tyrone Power飾）登門拜訪，請(qǐng)他出山打官司。原來(lái)，沃爾結(jié)識(shí)了富婆，兩人相見(jiàn)甚歡，雖然仆人對(duì)他發(fā)明的打蛋器充滿鄙夷，但是富婆卻對(duì)他充滿愛(ài)意，甚至為他修改了遺囑，把8萬(wàn)英鎊留給了他。然而，富婆卻慘遭毒手。于是，沃爾成為警方的頭號(hào)嫌疑犯。他的'唯一證人是妻子克里斯汀（瑪琳·黛德麗 Marlene Dietrich飾），然而后者登門時(shí)的冷漠與淡定，令韋菲爵士懷疑這其中另有隱情。在撲朔迷離的案件背后，隱藏著一個(gè)個(gè)環(huán)環(huán)相扣、不可告人的秘密……
