　　Once when I was six years old I saw a magnificent picture in a book, called True Stories from Nature, about the primeval forest. It was a picture of a boaconstrictor in the act of swallowing an animal. Here is a copy of the drawing.

　　當(dāng)我還只有六歲的時(shí)候，在一本描寫(xiě)原始森林的名叫《真實(shí)的故事》的書(shū)中，看到了一副精彩的插畫(huà)，畫(huà)的是一條蟒蛇正在吞食一只大野獸。頁(yè)頭上就是那副畫(huà)的摹本。

　　In the book it said: “Boa constrictors swallow their prey whole, without chewing it. After that they are not able to move, and they sleep through the

　　six months that they need for digestion.”

　　I pondered deeply, then, over the adventures of the jungle. And after some work with a colored pencil I succeeded in making my first drawing. My Drawing Number One. It looked like this:

　　I showed my masterpiece to the grown-ups, and asked them whether the drawing frightened them.But they answered: “Frighten? Why should any one be frightened by a hat?”

　　我把我的這副杰作拿大人看，我問(wèn)他們我的畫(huà)是不是叫他們害怕。

　　他們回答我說(shuō)：“一頂帽子有什么可怕的？”

　　My drawing was not a picture of a hat. It was a picture of a boa constrictor digesting an elephant. But since the grown-ups were not able to understand it,I made another drawing: I drew the inside of the boa constrictor, so that the grown-ups could see it clearly. They always need to have things explained. My Drawing Number Two looked like this:

　　我畫(huà)的不是一頂帽子，是不條巨蟒在消化著一頭大象。于是我又把巨蟒肚子里的情況畫(huà)了出來(lái)，以便讓大人們能夠看懂。這些大人總是需要解釋。我的第二號(hào)作品是這樣的

　　The grown-ups’ response, this time, was to advise me to lay aside my drawings of boa constrictors, whether from the inside or the outside, and devote myself instead to geography, history, arithmetic and grammar. That is why, at the age of six, I gave up what might have been a magnificent career as a painter.I had been disheartened by the failure of my Drawing Number One and my Drawing Number Two. Grown-ups never understand anything by themselves,and it is tiresome for children to be always and forever explaining things to them.

　　大人們勸我把這些畫(huà)著開(kāi)著肚皮的，或閉上肚皮的蟒蛇的圖畫(huà)放在一邊，還是把興趣放在地理、歷史、算術(shù)、語(yǔ)法上。就這樣，在六歲的那年，我就放棄了當(dāng)畫(huà)家這一美好的職業(yè)。我的第一號(hào)、第二號(hào)作品的不成功，使我泄了氣。這些大人們，靠他們自己什么也弄不懂，還得老是不斷地給他們作解釋。這真叫孩子們膩味。
